  1. This directory contains the "official" BINARY distribution of PC
  2. NetHack 3.0j (a.k.a. patchlevel 10).  The source code, if you want it,
  3. is stored in /pub/NH3.0.

  5. The binary consists of this readme.1st and the following two files:

  13. Be careful to transfer the .EXE files in BINARY mode, both when FTPing
  14. them from here AND when downloading them to your PC, otherwise they
  15. won't work at all!

  17. There are two ways of installing NetHack.  The easy way is to create a
  18. directory on your hard disk (which should have perhaps 1.5M free --
  19. NetHack is quite big and it can use a lot of temporary space while you
  20. are playing, too), and run each of the two distribution files with
  21. your hack directory as an argument, perhaps something like this:
  22.     MKDIR C:\GAMES\NETHACK
  23.     NH30JPC1 C:\GAMES\NETHACK\
  24.     NH30JPC2 C:\GAMES\NETHACK\
  25. (note well the trailing backslashes).  They will unpack themselves
  26. into the 22 files of a runnable NetHack.  At this point you want to
  27. start following the instructions in the README file that will be among
  28. those that materialise themselves in this process.

  30. If, on the other hand, you are concerned about the possibility of
  31. viruses infecting your machine, you should be aware that PKZIP can
  32. unpack self-extracting ZIP archives such as these WITHOUT running
  33. them, and it might be a reasonable idea to do that.  Furthermore, this
  34. will give you a chance to validate the checksums on the NetHack files
  35. before unpacking.  Note that when it comes to getting yourself a copy
  36. of PKZIP you are on your own, because if you don't trust one of our
  37. .EXEs, you'd be nuts to trust another!

  39. Whatever the way in which you finally unpack NetHack, you should get
  40. the following files:
